The "Rules of Lolita" As Defined by Me

As we all know our beloved fashion has many rules. Some seem silly until put into practice, like bloomers under dresses or skirts being below a certain length. Some are just part of the fashion at this point, like always needing some kind of petticoat. Here are the basic rules as I personally follow them.

Unless it isn't needed (weather, just hanging out inside, such and such) I have all of these parts to my coordinates
  • Headdress (Always)
  • An appropriate hairstyle (Always)
  • earrings (sometimes)
  • necklace (sometimes)
  • blouse (depends on the coord)
  • Main Piece (always)
  • Bloomers (always, fight me)
  • Petticoats (always)
  • socks, stockings, or tights (depends on the shoes)
  • shoes (Always unless inside someone's home and they ask you to remove them)
  • bag (Usually)
Some of these things are just personal preference some are actually required.

What is actually required is;
  • A headdress
  •  A blouse (unless it's an OP you can wear without one.)
  • JSK/Skirt/OP
  • petticoat
  • bloomers
  • legwear
  • shoes if outside
Some would argue that a bag of some kind is required because most dresses don't have pockets. I don't think it's required especially if you wear it at home a lot, but if you're going out it's best to carry a bag or have someone with you to carry your things.

Now in Lolita, there are quite a few rules as to how your clothes should look.
  • You should always have some kind of petticoat on, even if it's a casual coord.
  • You should have some kind of headdress on even if it's just a bow clip in your hair while it's down or in a ponytail.
  • You shouldn't be showing much if any cleavage on your chest. ( there are exceptions to this)
  • Lolita is a very modest fashion, so you should do your makeup modestly. "Less is more" is a general rule ( again there are exceptions )
  • Too many accessories can overwhelm the look so keep them to a reasonable amount. ( unless it's decora or OTT then go all out and have as many as you can )
  • If you like it it isn't out of style. ( looking at myself and rectangle headdresses)
  • Your look should be balanced, your skirt is big and poofy, add volume to your hair.
  • You shouldn't be showing a ton of skin, little to no cleavage unless it is Ero-Lolita and even then it is a very modest kind of sexy.
  • You shouldn't look sloppy with stains and bits of fluff or food on you, or your makeup a mess.
  • And lastly, you should enjoy wearing what you have on. Lolita is after all fashion, and unless you like it, even if you are the only one who does, it won't serve its purpose.
I do have my own rules for etiquette, manners, and actions for when I am in Lolita which I will put in another post, But for now, this is where I will say until next time my friends. Thank you so much for reading this post and if you have comments, questions, or suggestions for things I need to add please feel free to comment below. Thank you all and have a lovely day.
